Bisacodyl Tips from Pharmacists

  • Tell your doctor if you have had abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea, or changes in bowel habits in the 2 weeks before starting bisacodyl.

  • Swallow tablets whole. Do not chew, cut, or crush them.

  • Do not take the tablets with milk or within 1 hour of antacids such as Tums or proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole or pantoprazole.

  • Contact your doctor without delay if you don’t have a bowel movement after taking bisacodyl or you develop rectal bleeding.

  • Eat a high fiber diet and stay well hydrated for regular bowel movements.
