Bisacodyl Uses

Bisacodyl is used to treat occasional constipation or irregular bowel movements. It is also used to empty the bowels before certain surgical procedures.

Bisacodyl Mechanism of Action

Bisacodyl increases the activity of the intestinal smooth muscle to cause bowel movements.

Bisacodyl Doses

Bisacodyl oral is available as a 5 mg tablet. Bisacodyl suppositories contain a 10 mg dose of the medicine.

The typical dose of bisacodyl oral for adults and children 12 years of age and older is 1-3 tablets in a single dose. The bisacodyl dose for children 6-11 years of age is 1 tablet as needed to relieve constipation. For children younger than 6 years of age, you should ask the child’s doctor for the appropriate dose.
