Foods That Increase Dopamine

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (natural chemical) in the brain that plays a key role in many body functions like motivation, mood, focus, attention, memory, and motor control. Certain foods can boost dopamine levels in the body. Please continue reading to learn how to increase dopamine levels naturally.

What is dopamine?

Dopamine is a chemical messenger. It acts as a signaling system between nerve cells by attaching to dopamine receptors on brain cells. Dopamine is necessary for movement, mood, attention, memory, learning, behavior, sleep, arousal, and other body functions.

Dopamine release is also involved in blood vessel constriction and relaxation, insulin production in the pancreas, salt and water removal from the body, movement of gut contents, and lymphocyte function in the immune system

Low levels of dopamine or excess dopamine in the body are associated with diseases such as restless legs syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Parkinson’s disease. Doctors can boost dopamine levels with medications, but there are also some natural ways to do so.

Does dopamine make you feel happy?

Dopamine makes you feel happy. It is a “feel-good” hormone that creates a sense of happiness and pleasure. This is because dopamine plays a role in many functions like mood, motivation, attention, and memory.

Dopamine is a part of the brain’s reward system and is essential for brain health. When you do something enjoyable like eat dark chocolate, it causes the brain to produce dopamine. This makes you feel good, and you want to get more of that positive effect. As a result, you desire to repeat the activity. The human brain is hardwired to seek pleasurable behaviors that lead to dopamine release.

How do you feel when your dopamine levels are normal?

You feel happy, motivated, focused, and alert when you have enough dopamine.

How do you feel when dopamine production is low?

A low dopamine level can leave you feeling unhappy, unmotivated, tired, and unfocused. Low dopamine levels can also lead to mood swings, memory loss, sleep difficulties, problems with concentration, and a low sex drive.

How do you feel when you have excess dopamine?

If you have excessive production of dopamine, it can make you feel overly energetic and euphoric. You may also have problems with sleep, poor impulse control, aggressive behaviors, and a high sex drive.

What increases dopamine naturally?

You can try to boost your dopamine levels by eating foods high in an amino acid called tyrosine and other nutrients like magnesium. Here are some ways of increasing dopamine naturally.

Dopamine Diet

Tyrosine and magnesium are raw materials required to create dopamine. Foods that contain these amino acids and nutrients include nuts and seeds (almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and flaxseeds).

Protein intake with lean protein and unprocessed meats can help the body produce dopamine. Protein-rich foods like eggs, chicken, and fish (salmon, mackerel) are recommended.

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can boost dopamine levels, specifically apples, bananas, oranges, watermelon, strawberries, avocados, beets, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, velvet beans, lima beans, and peas.

It is also a good idea to eat foods like milk and dairy products that contain tyrosine. As mentioned, this is one of the building blocks of dopamine, and eating more foods that contain tyrosine can boost dopamine production.

Other foods that can naturally increase dopamine include dark chocolate and green tea. Foods like oatmeal, wheat germ, and turmeric are also believed to help release dopamine from brain cells.

It is worth noting that more research is needed to understand the exact effect of diet on neurotransmitters such as dopamine.

Foods to Avoid

Junk food and sugar can trigger the release of excess dopamine and other hormones like serotonin. However, this is not the best way to boost dopamine because it gives you a euphoric feeling and makes you want to repeat the experience. Most versions of the dopamine diet recommend avoiding alcohol, caffeine, processed sugars, saturated fat, and starchy carbohydrates.

Other Ways to Produce Dopamine Naturally

You can boost your dopamine naturally by getting regular sleep, enough sun exposure, and regular exercise. Other ways to increase dopamine release include spending time with loved ones, playing with a pet, reading a book, listening to music, achieving a meditative state, practicing yoga, and engaging in enjoyable activities that make you feel happy and relaxed.
