How To Use Budesonide

Budesonide comes in the form of a capsule or delayed-release capsule to take by mouth. Swallow the delayed-release capsule whole. Do not split, crush, or chew the capsule. You can, however, open a regular budesonide capsule (Entocort EC) and sprinkle the contents onto some applesauce, if you have trouble swallowing pills. Consume the mixture of applesauce and budesonide within half an hour and follow it up with a glass of water.

Take your medicine at around the same time every day. You can take budesonide with or without food. However, you should take Tarpeyo in the morning, at least one hour before a meal.

If you are using Uceris, apply the pump into your rectum once or twice a day as directed. Warm the canister with your hands and shake it well before use. Hold it upside down and gently insert the applicator tip into your anus. Hold it in place for 2 seconds to apply the foam.

To use the budesonide nasal spray, gently blow your nose. Shake the nasal spray bottle before use. Hold the spray upright, tilt your head slightly forward, close one nostril, and spray the medicine into the other nostril while you breathe in gently. Repeat on the other side.

Read the prescription label carefully. Take budesonide exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not take a higher or lower dose or take the medicine more or less frequently than prescribed.

Budesonide may control your symptoms but will not cure your condition. Do not stop taking budesonide without talking to your doctor, even if you feel well. Stopping budesonide suddenly after taking it for a long time can lead to withdrawal symptoms. Depending on your clinical response, if your symptoms are controlled on budesonide, your doctor may lower your dose. Patients treated with budesonide who have symptoms well controlled for 3 months can come off the medicine.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of budesonide, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store budesonide at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused budesonide should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw budesonide in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded budesonide is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
