How To Use Cholestyramine (Questran)
Cholestyramine comes as a powder to mix with fluids or food. Mix each dose with 2 to 6 ounces of water or other fluids and stir well. Do not eat cholestyramine powder in dry form. You can also mix the medicine with soups, pulpy orange juice, pureed fruits, applesauce, or crushed pineapple. Do not heat the powder, but you can mix it with hot foods. You can prepare the day’s medicine in advance and store it in the refrigerator.
Read the prescription label and package insert carefully. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your healthcare provider’s approval.
Try to take other medications at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after cholestyramine, as it can interfere with the absorption of other medicines.
Cholestyramine works in conjunction with a proper diet and exercise program to decrease serum cholesterol. The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) recommend less than 7% of calories from saturated fat, 10-25 grams of soluble fiber per day, increased physical activity, and weight management to achieve total serum cholesterol below 200 mg/dL.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of cholestyramine, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double or extra doses to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store cholestyramine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused cholestyramine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw cholestyramine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded cholestyramine is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
