How To Use Dexamethasone

Oral dexamethasone comes in the form of a tablet and solution to take by mouth. The dose and dosing schedule depends on the condition being treated.

Read the prescription label carefully and take the correct dose of dexamethasone as prescribed. Do not change the dose, dosing frequency, or treatment duration without your doctor’s approval.

Do not stop taking dexamethasone suddenly after taking it for a long time. This can cause symptoms such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, drowsiness, headache, confusion, peeling skin, fever, joint pain, and muscle pain. If you have been on high doses of dexamethasone therapy or have taken the drug for a long time, your doctor will tell you how to decrease the dose gradually. This will allow your body to adjust. Tell your doctor if you develop any of the above-mentioned side effects while you are tapering (decreasing) the dexamethasone dose or after you switch from an oral to an inhalation corticosteroid. Your doctor may ask you to temporarily increase the dose if you develop these symptoms.

Missed dose: Your doctor will give you instructions on what to do if you miss a dose. Write them down so you don’t forget. Usually, if you forget a dose of dexamethasone, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store dexamethasone at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired dexamethasone should be disposed of in a way that other people, children, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw dexamethasone in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded dexamethasone is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
