Dexamethasone Tips from Pharmacists

  • You can take dexamethasone tablets with or without food. However, this medicine frequently causes stomach upset, and it is best to take it with milk or food.

  • If dexamethasone causes trouble sleeping or anxiety, try taking your last dose a few hours before bedtime.

  • Use a dose-measuring cup or syringe to measure the dose of dexamethasone solution accurately. Using a regular household spoon to measure the oral solution can result in incorrect dosage.

  • If you have been prescribed a dose pack such as TaperDex, make sure you take the tablets in order. These dose packs contain a specific number of tablets of a certain dose to be taken for a specified number of days.

  • Check with your healthcare provider before receiving any vaccines during dexamethasone therapy.

  • Do not suddenly stop taking dexamethasone after long-term treatment. This can result in withdrawal effects.
