Diphenoxylate-Atropine Tips from Pharmacists

  • Your doctor will most probably advise you to start at high doses of Lomotil (two tablets four times a day) for initial control of diarrhea. These therapeutic doses are the maximum dose of Lomotil. Your doctor will advise you to lower the dose once your diarrhea improves, which usually occurs within 48 hours for most people.

  • Children under the age of 13 years should use the Lomotil liquid solution even if they are able to swallow tablets.

  • If you are using the liquid solution of diphenoxylate and atropine, use a dose measuring device such as a dropper or syringe to ensure accurate dosage. Using a household spoon to measure medication can result in accidental higher doses and increase the risk of serious complications.

  • You can store the liquid solution of diphenoxylate and atropine at room temperature. However, you should discard any unused liquid medicine 90 days after opening the bottle.

  • Diphenoxylate and atropine can cause dizziness and drowsiness. Be careful while driving or performing other activities that require you full focus until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Call your doctor if your diarrhea does not improve after 10 days of taking Lomotil or if you have worsening symptoms. Do not take repeated doses or use this medication for the long-term without talking to your doctor.
