Side Effects


Docusate (Colace) Adverse Effects

Possible side effects of docusate are listed below. Tell your doctor if they are severe or do not go away after a few days.

  • Stomach or intestinal cramps
  • Nausea
  • Throat irritation and bitter taste (from oral liquid)
  • Rectal irritation (from rectal enema)
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive bowel activity

Other more serious side effects of docusate are listed below. Call your doctor right away if you experience side effects such as:

  • Skin rash
  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Sudden change in bowel movement patterns for 2 weeks or more
  • Stomach pain

Docusate Overdose: In case of a known or suspected overdose, call your doctor or the local poison control center immediately. If the person can’t be awakened, has had a seizure, or has trouble breathing, call 911. An overdose of docusate can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or diarrhea. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances are more common in children than adults.
