Doxycycline Monohydrate Side Effects

Possible side effects of doxycycline monohydrate are listed below. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects if they are severe or do not go away in a few days.

  • Gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite
  • Rectal itching
  • Swelling, burning, itching, redness, irritation of the vagina, and vaginal discharge
  • Pain with urination
  • Sore throat
  • Dry mouth
  • Back pain
  • Anxiety
  • Changes in skin color or the color of nails, eyes, mouth, or scars

Some of the adverse effects of doxycycline monohydrate are more serious. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if you develop the following adverse reactions or serious symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Blurred vision, double vision
  • Skin rash, hives, redness, burning, blistering, or peeling
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling of the eyes, face, mouth, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Stomach cramps, fever, and watery or bloody stools for up to 2 months after stopping treatment with doxycycline monohydrate
  • Signs of infection such as fever, chills, sore throat
  • Joint pain
  • Teeth discoloration

Doxycycline monohydrate Overdose: In case of an overdose of doxycycline monohydrate, call your doctor immediately. You can also call your local poison control center, provincial poison control center, or the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 or emergency services if a person has collapsed, cannot breathe, has had a seizure, or cannot be awakened.
