How To Use Doxycycline Monohydrate

Doxycycline monohydrate comes in the form of a tablet, capsule, or oral suspension to take by mouth 1-2 times a day. Take the medicine with a full glass of water to prevent burning and irritation in the food pipe. If you develop stomach upset, taking the medicine with milk or food might help. Try to take your medicine at around the same time(s) every day.

Take this medicine on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

If you are taking the liquid form of the medicine, use a dose measuring cup or syringe to carefully measure the dose (and not a regular household spoon).

Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet carefully and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Do not take a higher or lower dose of doxycycline monohydrate or take it more or less often than prescribed.

If you are taking doxycycline monohydrate for the prevention of malaria, start taking it 1-2 days before travel and continue taking it 4 weeks after returning home to maintain effectiveness. Do not take this medication for malaria prevention for longer than 4 months.

Do not discontinue medication until you finish the course prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel well and your symptoms disappear.

Do not substitute one doxycycline product for another without talking to your doctor first.

Missed dose: Avoid skipping doses. However, if you miss a dose of doxycycline monohydrate, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store doxycycline monohydrate at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused doxycycline monohydrate should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw doxycycline monohydrate in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded doxycycline monohydrate is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
