Dyazide (TRIAMTERENE / HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Keep all your medical appointments while on this drug. Your provider may want to order certain laboratory tests during treatment with Dyazide.

  • Dyazide can make you urinate more, so it is better to take it in the morning or afternoon. If you take it in the evening, do so at least 4 hours before bedtime to avoid sleep disturbance due to excessive urination at night.

  • Taking this medication can lead to dizziness. This is especially true when you first start the medication. The side effect usually subsides as your body adjusts to it. Get up slowly from a lying or sitting position to avoid dizziness and falls. Also, avoid driving, operating machinery, or doing anything that requires your full focus until you know how Dyaize affects you. Remember that alcohol can make this side effect worse.

  • Do not take salt substitutes or potassium supplements or eat potassium rich foods unless your doctor says it is okay.

  • Lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise can help in managing high blood pressure and may reduce the need for medication in the future.
