Guaifenesin Tips from Pharmacists

  • For best results in clearing congestion, make sure you drink enough fluids while on guaifenesin.

  • Do not cut, crush, or chew the extended-release tablets. Swallow the ER tablet whole with a full glass of water.

  • Use a dose-measuring device such as a syringe or cup to measure the correct dose of liquid guaifenesin.

  • Guaifenesin works by loosening mucus. It is not effective against dry coughs. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for alternatives if you have a dry cough.

  • Check the label of your cough and cold medicine before taking two or more products together. Many products contain the same or similar ingredients, and you do not want to exceed the maximum dose of guaifenesin.

  • If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of taking guaifenesin or if you have a high fever, rash, and headache, contact your doctor. It could be something more serious.
