How To Use Hydrocortisone Acetate

Hydrocortisone acetate comes in the form of a tablet to take by mouth. It can cause an upset stomach, and taking it with food or milk usually helps.

Read the prescription label carefully and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions exactly. Do not take a higher or lower dose of hydrocortisone acetate or take it more or less frequently than advised by your doctor.

If you are using the capsules containing hydrocortisone acetate granules, open the capsule and pour the contents into your mouth or onto a spoon and swallow immediately. You can also mix the granules with a soft food like applesauce. Consume the granules right away after opening the capsule. Do not swallow the capsule containing the granules whole. Drink some water or milk afterward to ensure you swallow all of the medicine.

If you vomit after taking hydrocortisone, contact your doctor. They will tell you whether you need to repeat a dose.

Follow up with your doctor regularly during treatment with hydrocortisone acetate. Your provider will adjust your dose so that you are taking the lowest effective dose. They may also adjust your dose if you are going to be under any kind of physical stress, for example, related to an infection, illness, or surgery.

Hydrocortisone acetate will control your symptoms, but it will not cure your condition. Continue taking the medicine even if you feel well. Tell your doctor if there is any change in your symptoms. Do not stop taking hydrocortisone acetate suddenly. If you are on a large dose, your doctor will lower your dose gradually. Stopping it too quickly may result in fatigue, weakness, salt cravings, vomiting, upset stomach, decreased appetite, muscle and joint pains, and skin color changes.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of hydrocortisone acetate, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store hydrocortisone acetate at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused hydrocortisone acetate should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw hydrocortisone acetate in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded hydrocortisone acetate is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
