Hydrocortisone Acetate Uses

Hydrocortisone acetate belongs to a group called corticosteroids. It is used to treat adrenal insufficiency (a condition in which the adrenal glands do not make enough natural steroid hormones). It is also prescribed for a wide range of inflammatory conditions. Topical corticosteroids (hydrocortisone cream) are used to treat inflammatory skin conditions.

There may be other uses of hydrocortisone acetate—your pharmacist or doctor can give you further drug information.

Hydrocortisone Acetate Mechanism of Action

In people with low cortisol levels, hydrocortisone acetate replaces the steroid hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands in the body. Additionally, this drug reduces the action of inflammatory mediators that cause swelling and redness. Therefore, it is also used to treat inflammation.

Hydrocortisone Acetate Doses

Hydrocortisone acetate is available as 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg tablets. The dose depends on the condition being treated. The typical dose in adults and children over 12 years of age is 20-240 mg by mouth per day, taken in 3-4 divided doses. The dose in children under 12 years of age is 2.5-10 mg/kg per day in 3-4 divided doses.
