Hyoscyamine Tips from Pharmacists

  • If you are taking hyoscyamine liquid or oral drops, make sure you use a dose measuring device (and not a common household spoon) to measure the dose.

  • Do not crush, chew, or split the extended-release hyoscyamine tablets.

  • Different forms of hyoscyamine contain different amounts of the medication. Read the prescription label carefully before taking hyoscyamine or giving hyoscyamine to a child to ensure the correct dose.

  • Hyoscyamine can dry you out. Stay well hydrated while on this medicine and avoid extreme heat.

  • If you get dry mouth on hyoscyamine, try sucking on ice chips or sugarless hard candy or gum.

  • Hyoscyamine can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. Be careful while driving or doing anything that requires your complete attention until you know how the medicine affects you.

  • Hyoscyamine can cause dry eyes. Talk to your eye doctor about using lubricating eye drops, especially if you wear contact lenses.
