Irbesartan (Avapro) Uses

Irbesartan is used for lowering blood pressure. It can help people with high blood pressure achieve blood pressure goals by causing a clinically significant decrease in blood pressure readings. Treatment of hypertension is part of a comprehensive cardiovascular risk management plan.

Irbesartan is also used to slow the progression of diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage in people with diabetes).

There may be other uses of irbesartan—your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Irbesartan (Avapro) Mechanism of Action

Irbesartan acts on the renin angiotensin system. It blocks the action of angiotensin, a natural substance in the body that causes tightening of the blood vessels. By blocking angiotensin, irbesartan relaxes or widens blood vessels, makes blood flow smoother, lowers blood pressure, and helps the heart pump blood more efficiently.

Irbesartan (Avapro) Doses

Irbesartan is available as 75 mg, 150 mg, and 300 mg tablets.

For lowering blood pressure, the usual starting dose of irbesartan is 150 mg per day. The maximum dose is 300 mg per day. The dose for diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage in diabetic patients) is 300 mg daily.
