What are metronidazole (MetroGel) side effects?

The most common side effects of metronidazole include:

  • Increased skin redness, itching, dryness, burning, stinging, or irritation
  • Pink eye, watery eyes
  • Nasopharyngitis (common cold)
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Nausea

Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not get better over time. Some side effects of metronidazole are more serious. You should call your doctor immediately if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Rash, itching, hives
  • Numbness, tingling, burning, pain

The above list may not include all the potential adverse effects of metronidazole. Contact your doctor if you have severe adverse effects or your symptoms are worsening. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Metronidazole Overdose: This medication can be harmful if swallowed. In case of any overdose symptoms, call your doctor or the local poison control center or seek emergency medical attention.
