Mirtazapine (Remeron) Tips from Pharmacists

  • If you are taking the mirtazapine (Remeron SolTab) orally disintegrating tablets, use dry hands to remove the tablet from the foil pack. Place it on your tongue immediately and swallow the medicine with saliva once it dissolves. Do not cut, crush, or chew the orally disintegrating mirtazapine tablet.

  • You can take mirtazapine with or without food. If you have nausea after taking the medicine, taking it with food might help.

  • It is best to take mirtazapine at bedtime because this medicine can cause drowsiness and dizziness.

  • Do not drive or do anything that requires your full focus until you know how mirtazapine affects you.

  • Avoid alcohol while on mirtazapine therapy because this can make side effects worse.

  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet while on mirtazapine. This medicine can increase your cholesterol levels, increase appetite, and cause weight gain.

  • Call your doctor immediately if you develop new or worsening symptoms of depression or suicidal ideation while on mirtazapine (Remeron).

  • Seek emergency medical attention if you develop signs and symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as fast heartbeat, agitation, confusion, insomnia, and muscle spasms.
