Mupirocin Tips from Pharmacists

  • Mupirocin 2 percent is for use on small areas of skin. Apply a thin film of the ointment 3 times a day for 1-2 weeks as directed by your health care professional.

  • Wash your hands before applying mupirocin ointment. Make sure the area of application is clean and dry.

  • You can cover the treated area with sterile gauze but don’t use a plastic wrap, bandage, or other occlusive dressings that do not allow airflow.

  • Do not apply mupirocin on mucosal surfaces, i.e., in the eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina.

  • Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 3-5 days of using mupirocin topical ointment.

  • Finish the course of antibiotic treatment as instructed by your doctor. Don’t stop using the medicine even if your symptoms are better. Stopping the treatment too early can result in incomplete clearance of the skin infection.
