Norethindrone Uses

Norethindrone is used to prevent pregnancy. It is also used at higher doses to treat endometriosis, lack of menstrual periods, and abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance. In addition, norethindrone may be the progestogen component in combined hormone replacement therapy (menopausal hormone therapy), where it is used along with estrogen to relieve menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women.

There may be other uses of norethindrone. Your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Norethindrone Mechanism of Action

Norethindrone prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation (preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries) and causing changes in the reproductive tract lining (cervical mucus and uterine lining).

Note: Taking oral contraceptives like norethindrone does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection.

Norethindrone Doses

Norethindrone is available in a pill pack, which contains 28 tablets. Each tablet contains 0.35 mg of norethindrone. You should take one tablet once a day at the same time.
