Nystatin - Triamcinolone Risks, Warnings, and Complications

Nystatin triamcinolone can cause serious side effects or worsen health problems in some people. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other treatments for your skin condition if you are at increased risk of complications from nystatin triamcinolone.

  • ALLERGIC REACTION: Seek emergency medical care if you develop signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as a skin rash, hives, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing after using nystatin triamcinolone. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions to nystatin, triamcinolone, other antifungals, or other corticosteroids.

  • HPA AXIS SUPPRESSION: Nystatin triamcinolone contains a topical corticosteroid that can lead to reversible suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This can result in symptoms of Cushing's syndrome (too much cortisol), hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), and glucosuria (glucose in the urine). Risk factors include using the medicine over large areas of the body, prolonged use, and the use of occlusive dressings or tight fitting clothing in the treated area. Children are at a particularly high risk of absorbing large amounts of topical corticosteroids and are therefore at a higher risk of systemic toxicity. Do not place tight fitting diapers in the groin area after using this medicine to treat a diaper rash.

Give your doctor or pharmacist a complete list of your medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, herbal remedies, and topical medications. Also, tell your healthcare professional if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use recreational drugs because some of these substances can cause serious health complications when used with prescription and over-the-counter medications.
