How To Use Ozempic

Ozempic comes as a liquid solution in a pre-filled pen for subcutaneous injection under the skin. This medication is typically injected once a week in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. You can administer the Ozempic injection at any time of day, regardless of meal times. However, you should inject Ozempic on the same day of the week every week. If you wish to change the day of the week you inject Ozempic, make sure it has been at least 48 hours (2 days) since your last dose.

You can inject Ozempic in your stomach area, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate (change) the injection site every week. You can inject insulin and Ozempic in the same area, but do not give yourself the injections right next to each other.

If you have stored an Ozempic pen in the refrigerator, allow it to warm to room temperature before using it.

Make sure the Ozempic injection solution is clear, colorless, and free of particles before injecting it. Do not use the medication if it is cloudy, colored, or contains floating particles. Do not use an Ozempic injection pen that is past its expiration date.

Read the manufacturer’s instructions about how to inject Ozempic. If you do not understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and use Ozempic exactly as directed by your healthcare professional. Do not use more or less of this medicine or use it more or less frequently than prescribed by your doctor.

Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose of Ozempic injection and increase your dose after 4 weeks. Depending on your response to the medicine, they may increase your dose again after an additional 4 weeks.

Never share your Ozempic pen with someone else or reuse a needle. Remove the needle immediately after injecting an Ozempic dose and dispose of it in a protective, sharps, puncture-resistant container.

You should know that Ozempic works in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control diabetes and aid weight loss. However, it is not a cure for diabetes. Continue using Ozempic even if you feel well. Do not stop using this medication without talking to your doctor.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Ozempic, take the medicine as soon as you remember. You can administer a dose of Ozempic within 5 days of a missed dose. However, if more than 5 days have passed since the missed dose, skip it and take the next dose as scheduled. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage:

  • You should store unused Ozempic pens in the refrigerator (36-46°F or 2-8°C). Avoid placing the pens near the cooling element of the refrigerator.
  • Once an Ozempic pen is in use, you can store it in the refrigerator or at room temperature (59-86°F or 15-30°C).
  • Never freeze Ozempic pens. Do not use Ozempic if the medicine has been frozen.
  • While traveling, you can store your Ozempic pens at room temperature but do not keep them in the glove compartment or other hot places in a car.
  • Note down the date when you first start using an Ozempic pen. Discard the pen after 56 days, even if some medicine is left in the pen.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused Ozempic. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal. Your pharmacist or healthcare professional will tell you how to dispose of the puncture-resistant container containing your used needles.
