Directions

How should I take methylphenidate (Ritalin)?

Take methylphenidate as directed by your healthcare professional and/or pharmacist. This prescription medicine comes in oral tablet, chewable tablet, liquid, and long-acting (extended-release) formulations in the form of capsules or tablets. The long-acting formulations supply some medication right away and release the remaining medication over the next several hours. The extended-release tablets of methylphenidate must be swallowed whole and not crushed, split, or chewed.

All the different formulations of methylphenidate are taken by mouth. The oral tablet, chewable tablet, and solution are usually taken in divided doses 2-3 times a day, preferably 30-45 minutes before meals. You should take the medicine by mouth with a glass of water. You should chew the chewable tablet thoroughly before swallowing it with water.

If you are taking three doses of methylphenidate, take the last dose before 6 p.m. to prevent sleep difficulties.

The long-acting extended-release formulations of methylphenidate are usually taken once daily in the morning with or without food but taken in the same way each time. Do not split, crush, or chew the extended-release / long-acting formulations.

If you are taking the oral suspension (liquid), shake the bottle before use. Then, measure the dose using the bottle adapter and dosing dispenser. Your pharmacist can show you how if you are unsure.

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Take methylphenidate exactly as advised. Do not take more or less of this medicine or take it more often or longer than prescribed.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of methylphenidate, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed dose. Talk to your healthcare professional about how late in the day you can take a dose so that it does not cause difficulties with falling asleep or staying asleep.

Storage: Store methylphenidate at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light, in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications in a safe place out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unneeded or expired methylphenidate should be disposed of so that pets, children, and others cannot consume them. Do not flush the medication down the toilet. The best way to dispose of your medication is through a medicine take-back program--ask your local pharmacy about such programs in your community. Learn more about proper medication disposal of prescription medicines.
