How To Use Tacrolimus (Protopic)

Apply a thin layer of the ointment twice a day to the area where you have eczema. Make sure you apply the medicine to clean, dry skin. Only use the medication in the affected area. Use the minimum amount of ointment needed to control eczema symptoms. Gently rub the ointment into the skin. Stop using tacrolimus ointment as soon as your symptoms go away. Do not place an occlusive dressing, bandage, or wrap on the treated skin. However, you can cover the area with normal clothing.

Wash your hands with soap and water after using tacrolimus ointment (unless you are treating your hands with the medicine). Do not bathe, shower, or swim right away after applying the ointment.

Read the prescription label carefully and use tacrolimus ointment exactly as prescribed. Do not use a larger amount or apply the medicine more frequently than advised by your healthcare provider. Do not continue using the medicine for longer than your doctor recommends.

Tell your doctor if symptoms of eczema (redness, dryness, itching, scaling) are not better after 6 weeks of using tacrolimus ointment or if the same symptoms come back after you stop using the medicine.

Protect your skin from sunlight. Do not use tanning beds or sunlamps or undergo ultraviolet light therapy while using tacrolimus ointment.

Missed dose: If you forget to apply tacrolimus ointment, do it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed application and go back to your regular schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed application.

Storage: Store tacrolimus at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not leave the ointment in your car where it may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired tacrolimus should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw tacrolimus in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded tacrolimus is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
