Tacrolimus (Protopic) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Before using tacrolimus ointment, tell your doctor if you have a history of skin cancer.

  • Do not use the 0.1% strength in children younger than age 16.

  • Apply a thin layer of the medicine and use the smallest amount necessary to control symptoms of eczema.

  • Do not place a wrap, bandage, or dressing on the treated skin.

  • Unless you are treating your hands, wash your hands with soap and water after applying Protopic ointment.

  • Do not bathe, shower, or swim right away after applying tacrolimus.

  • Tell your provider if your symptoms do not improve after 6 weeks of treatment with this medication.

  • Tell your doctor if you develop persistent skin burning, itching, stinging, or soreness in the treated skin.

  • Avoid unnecessary sun exposure and wear protective clothing when outdoors.
