Tamoxifen Citrate Side Effects

Common side effects of tamoxifen citrate are listed below. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects if they are severe or persistent.

  • Increased pain and redness at the tumor site
  • Increased bone pain
  • Hot flashes
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Thinning hair
  • Stomach cramps
  • Constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Decreased libido or sexual ability (in men)

Rarely, tamoxifen citrate can cause more serious side effects. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical help if you develop the following symptoms:

  • Problems with vision
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Skin rash or blisters
  • Swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Swelling of the arms, hands, lower legs, ankles, or feet
  • Muscle weakness
  • Excessive thirst
  • Restlessness

The above list may not include all the adverse effects of tamoxifen citrate. Contact your healthcare provider or seek medical attention if the adverse effects are unusual or severe or they do not get better over time. You can also report unusual or severe adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Tamoxifen citrate Overdose: In case of an overdose of tamoxifen citrate, call your doctor immediately. You can also call your local poison control center or the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 if someone has collapsed, stopped breathing, had a seizure, or is not responding. Signs and symptoms of an overdose of tamoxifen citrate may include shakiness, dizziness, or unsteadiness.
