How To Use Testosterone (AndroGel)

Testosterone gel or solution is applied to the skin once daily, usually in the morning. Try to apply the medicine at approximately the same time daily - this will help you remember.

Read the prescription label carefully and use testosterone solution or gel exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without consulting your healthcare provider. Make sure you understand where to apply a particular product (each brand name product is to be used slightly differently).

If you are using a testosterone-metered dose pump, your pharmacist will tell you how many pumps to use every day and how many doses are in the container. Your pharmacist will show you how to prime a topical testosterone pump before you use it for the first time (this is done by pressing the pump a few times). It may be easier to squeeze the medicine onto your palm and apply it in small amounts. Dispose of the container after you have used all the doses in a pump (even if there’s some product remaining). Make sure you dispose of tubes and packets carefully so that children and pets cannot get to them.

Apply the medicine after a bath or shower (if you take a bath or shower in the morning). Read the manufacturer’s information to find out how long you should wait before washing, bathing, showering, or swimming after applying testosterone.

Do not apply testosterone gel to your scrotum or penis. Always apply the medicine to intact skin only and not on broken, cut, or irritated skin. Avoid getting testosterone gel into your eyes. If this happens, wash your eyes with warm water and call your doctor if you develop eye irritation.

Topical testosterone products can be harmful to other people who come in contact with your skin where the gel or solution was applied. In particular, women and children have a high risk of harm from touching skin on which testosterone topical products have been applied. If pregnant or breastfeeding women touch skin that has topical testosterone, the baby can be harmed.

To prevent others from coming in contact with testosterone solution or gel on your skin, after application, allow the medicine to dry completely and then cover the area with clothing so that there is no bare skin. Make sure you wash your hands with soap and water after using the medicine to get rid of residual testosterone.

Avoid skin-to-skin contact with the area where you applied testosterone gel or solution. If there is skin-to-skin contact with another part of your body, wash the area with soap and water. If someone else has skin-to-skin contact with an area of your skin that has testosterone on it, the other person should immediately wash their skin with soap and water. Others should also be careful while handling their clothes and bed linen, which may have traces of testosterone topical products on them, which may be enough for producing circulating testosterone concentrations.

Keep testosterone topical products away from fire. Avoid smoking or going near flames while the gel or solution is drying.

Your doctor may perform dosage adjustments based on your response. This medication will help to manage your symptoms of low testosterone, but it will not cure the underlying condition. Continue using testosterone even if you are symptom-free. Your symptoms may return if you discontinue topical testosterone.

Missed dose: If you forget to apply a dose of testosterone, do it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store topical testosterone at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired testosterone should be disposed of in a way that other people, children, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw testosterone in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded topical testosterone gel or solution is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
