Testosterone (AndroGel) Tips from Pharmacists

  • All the brand name and generic testosterone topical products are slightly different in terms of how they should be used. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully before applying the medicine.

  • After the medicine has dried, cover the application site with clothing to prevent skin-to-skin contact with other people. Wash your hands with soap and water after applying the medicine.

  • Do not misuse or abuse testosterone gel or solution for bodybuilding purposes. This carries serious health risks. You should know that testosterone solution and gel are banned in athletes by most athletic organizations.

  • Topical testosterone can decrease blood glucose levels. If you have diabetes, talk to your healthcare provider about the need to change your diet or medication dosages.

  • Testosterone replacement therapy can lead to a decreased sperm count and affect fertility. Discuss this risk with your provider if you plan to have children in the future.

  • Testosterone gel is flammable. Avoid smoking and stay away from flames until the medicine dries completely.
