Urea Uses

Urea is a keratolytic, meaning it breaks down keratin in the skin. This medicine is used to treat abnormally thick, rough, and dry skin. It is available in various forms, such as gels, creams, foams, lotions, and emulsions to treat skin conditions such as cracks, fissures, and calluses, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and hyperkeratosis. It can also be used to non-surgically remove diseased or damaged nails.

There may be other uses of urea—your pharmacist or doctor can give you further drug information.

Urea Mechanism of Action

It is unclear how urea exerts its keratolytic effect.

Urea Doses

Topical skin products with urea as the active ingredient are available in cream, foam, gel, lotion, and emulsion forms. The medicine is usually applied twice a day to the affected area. However, the application frequency may vary depending on the area being treated and the specific product being used.
