Uses

What is Xyzal (levocetirizine) used for?

Xyzal is an over-the-counter antihistamine used for continuous allergy relief from year-round and seasonal allergies and uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria (chronic hives).

How does Xyzal (levocetirizine) work?

Histamines are chemicals in the body that cause allergy symptoms by acting on H1 receptors. Xyzal blocks H1 receptors.

What are Xyzal (levocetirizine) doses?

Xyzal is available as a 5-mg tablet and 2.5 mg/5 mL oral solution. The usual dose of this medication is 5 mg (one tablet or 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of the oral solution) once daily in the evening in adults and children over the age of 12.

The dose is 2.5 mg (half a tablet or 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of the oral solution) once daily in the evening in pediatric patients between the ages of 6 and 11 years. Do not exceed the recommended child’s dose of 2.5 mg daily (a child’s body absorbs the drug at approximately twice the rate as an adult’s body). In a child younger than 6 years, consult a healthcare provider for the recommended dose.

The dose of Xyzal may need to be adjusted in patients with kidney disease. Such patients should follow their doctor’s dosing instructions carefully.
