Directions

How should I take Zovirax?

Take Zovirax exactly as prescribed. Follow all directions on the prescription label and any medication guides if provided. Based on your response, the dose may be increased or decreased, and never take a larger or smaller amount than the prescribed dose.

Read all medication guides and instruction sheets provided to you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unclear about something or have further questions.

Let your doctor know if you have had any weight gain or weight loss. Because Zovirax is dosed by weight, your dose may need to be adjusted with weight changes.

You should start taking Zovirax as soon as you notice the symptoms such as tingling, burning feeling, or blisters.

If you are using the liquid form of Zovirax for you or your child, use an oral syringe or medicine cup for the most accurate dosing. You can ask your pharmacist if you don’t have one. Do not use household items such as kitchen spoons.

Shake the oral suspension well before using it.

Finish the whole course of Zovirax as prescribed by your doctor. Even if your symptoms have improved or resolved, do not stop taking the medication. Not finishing the course of medication can increase the risk of the virus becoming resistant to the drug.

You should keep the lesions as clean and dry as possible; avoid wearing tight clothing to prevent irritation.

Stay well-hydrated while taking Zovirax to keep your kidneys healthy.

You should take Zovirax around the same time(s) every day.

Do not chew, crush, swallow, or suck on the delayed-release buccal tablets.

Instructions for the use of Zovirax delayed-release buccal tablet:

  • Zovirax delayed-release buccal tablet is used as a one-time dose applied within 1 hour after cold sore symptoms begin but before the cold sore appears.
  • Ensure your hands are dry before removing one buccal tablet from the container
  • The area where you should apply the buccal tablet is on your upper gum area, above your incisor teeth—this is the tooth on the left or right side of your two front teeth.
  • Locate the area described above.
  • Gently apply the tablet to the upper gum area as high as it will go to the area described above on the side of your mouth where the cold sore is.
  • Do not apply to the side of the cheek or lip.
  • Hold the tablet in place for 30 seconds.
  • Reposition if the buccal tablet doesn’t stick to your gum or if it sticks to your cheek or the inside of your lip. Leave the tablet in place until it dissolves completely.
  • Check to ensure the tablet is still in place after eating, drinking, or rinsing your mouth.
  • Do not brush your teeth until it dissolves completely.

Missed dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the amount or take more than prescribed to make up for the missed dose. Let your doctor know immediately if you have missed more than one dose or are unsure about what to do.

Storage: Keep the medication in its original container or blister packs; keep it tightly closed, out of reach of children, pets, and other people. Like any medications dispensed only with prescriptions, Zovirax should not be shared with anyone. Many people store their medications in the bathroom; this is not recommended due to moisture and heat.

Unused medicine: Like other prescription medications, do not consume or use Zovirax after the expiration date. This medication is a prescription drug that is intended for your use only. Unneeded medicines should be disposed of appropriately to prevent children, pets, and other people from getting to them. Your local pharmacy can provide information about medication drug take-back programs. You can also learn more about proper medication disposal.
