Zovirax (Acyclovir) tips from pharmacists

  • You should start taking Zovirax as soon as you notice signs of an outbreak. Start Zovirax within 24 hours of chickenpox symptoms and 72 hours of shingles symptoms.

  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water while taking Zovirax to ensure the kidneys are working well.

  • The treatment regimen of Zovirax requires up to five times a day dosing. You should use a pillbox or phone reminder to help you remember taking your medication in evenly spaced intervals.

  • Zovirax does not cure genital herpes. It is used for acute treatment to reduce the outbreak's duration and severity. Avoid sexual contact if you have an outbreak, and practice safe sex once the outbreak has subsided and the lesions have healed.

  • For those with recurrent genital herpes or cold sores, it is recommended to have a prescription ready at the pharmacy in case an outbreak happens.

  • You should finish the whole course of Zovirax prescribed to you even when your symptoms have improved. You should not stop this medication early without your doctor’s instruction. Not finishing the course of medication can increase the risk of the virus becoming resistant to medication.
