What are Nexium (esomeprazole) side effects?

Nexium can cause the following adverse reactions:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Indigestion (gas)
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth

Tell your doctor if these Nexium side effects are severe or do not go away with time. Some of the more serious side effects of Nexium require immediate medical attention. Contact your doctor without delay if you have the following signs and symptoms:

  • Peeling skin, blisters, rash, hives, itching
  • Swelling of the face, tongue, throat, lips, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Irregular, pounding, or fast heartbeat
  • Excessive tiredness
  • Hoarseness
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness
  • Jitteriness, uncontrolled shaking, seizures
  • Muscle cramps, spasms, or weakness
  • Severe diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, fever, rash, joint pain
  • Increase or decrease in urination, blood in the urine

The above list may not include all the potential side effects of Nexium. Talk to your doctor if you have severe side effects or if the side effects do not improve over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Nexium Overdose: In case of a known or suspected overdose, call your doctor or pharmacist immediately or call the poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222. If a person has collapsed, had a seizure, has trouble breathing, or cannot be awakened, call 911 immediately. Symptoms of an overdose of Nexium may include drowsiness, confusion, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, headache, dry mouth, flushing, sweating, and nausea..
