What is Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) used for?

Norco is a prescription drug used to manage pain that is severe enough to require an opioid analgesic. It is also prescribed to patients who do not tolerate or get sufficient pain relief from alternative treatment options (non-opioid analgesics).

How does Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) work?

Norco contains two medicines. The hydrocodone in Norco belongs to a group of medications called opioid drugs. These drugs change the brain’s response to pain. The second ingredient in Norco, acetaminophen, is believed to work by reducing the levels of certain chemicals called prostaglandins in the brain, linked to inflammation and swelling.

What are Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) doses?

Norco is available in doses of 2.5 mg/325 mg, 5 mg/325 mg, 7.5 mg/325 mg, and 10 mg/325 mg. A typical dose of Norco 5 mg/325 mg in adults is 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed for pain. The total daily dosage should not exceed 8 tablets. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Norco and gradually increase the dose. Healthcare providers target the lowest dose for the shortest duration to control pain.
