How To Use Olopatadine

Olopatadine comes in the form of an ophthalmic solution to be instilled on the surface of the eye. Do not swallow this medicine or use it as an injection.

Olopatadine 0.1% eye drop (Pataday) is applied one drop in the affected eye twice a day. The 0.2% and 0.7% olopatadine eye drops are applied one drop in the affected eye once a day.

Read the prescription label or package label carefully and use olopatadine exactly as instructed. Do not use a higher or lower dose or use this medicine more or less frequently than advised.

Before applying olopatadine, wash your hands with soap and water. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the eye drops. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip to your eye surface, eyelid, or any other surface.

Tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid down to create a pocket. Squeeze one drop of the medicine into this pocket, close your eye, and apply gentle pressure while you tilt your head down for a couple of minutes.

Replace the dropper in the bottle. Do not rinse or wash the dropper. Always wash your hands after applying eye drops to remove any remaining medicine. Wait at least 10 minutes before instilling any other eye drop or wearing contact lenses.

Remember, olopatadine is not for contact lens related redness. This medicine provides supportive and symptomatic treatment of allergic conjunctivitis but will not cure your condition. You may need to use olopatadine for 12-14 weeks for complete symptom relief.

Missed dose:  If you forget to apply a dose of olopatadine, do it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store olopatadine at 2°C to 25°C (36°F to 77°F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired olopatadine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw olopatadine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded olopatadine is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
