Simethicone Uses

Simethicone is used to relieve painful pressure caused by extra gas.

There may be other uses of simethicone—your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Simethicone Mechanism of Action

Simethicone reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles and prevents the formation of gas pockets in the gastrointestinal tract. The medicine is not absorbed systemically and is excreted unchanged in the stool.

Simethicone Doses

Simethicone comes in the form of tablets (80 mg), chewable tablets (80 mg, 125 mg), capsules (125 mg, 180 mg), and liquid drops (20 mg/0.3 mL). Each product has a different dose and instructions for use. The usual dose is 1-2 capsules or tablets four times a day after meals and at bedtime. The maximum dose of simethicone in adults is 500 mg per day. Simethicone liquid drops can be used to relieve a child’s gas symptoms, and the typical dose is 20 mg to 40 mg (0.3 mL to 0.6 mL) by mouth after meals and at bedtime.
