Simethicone Risks, Warnings, and Complications

Serious allergic reactions to this drug are rare. However, you should seek emergency medical help if you develop a skin rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face and mouth, or difficulty breathing or swallowing after taking simethicone.

Do not exceed the recommended maximum dose of simethicone in a 24-hour period as indicated on the package. In case of an overdose, contact your physician without delay or call a poison control center immediately.

Precautions Before Starting Simethicone

Tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to simethicone, any of the active or inactive ingredients in simethicone products, or any other medications. Your pharmacy can give you a list of ingredients.

Give your doctor and pharmacist a complete list of your medications, including prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products. This can help avoid possible interactions between your medications.

Tell your doctor if you have any pre-existing health problems, especially a medical condition involving your gastrointestinal tract.

Make an appointment to see your doctor if your gas symptoms are severe or persistent after taking over-the-counter simethicone and eating a special diet. Also, tell your doctor if your gas symptoms are accompanied by heartburn, severe stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, blood in stool, or unintentional weight loss. You may have a more serious medical problem that cannot be treated with over-the-counter simethicone.

Tell your health care professional if you are pregnant, could be pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or are breast feeding.

Precautions During Use of Simethicone

Keep all your medical and lab appointments during simethicone treatment if it has been prescribed by a doctor. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while on this medicine.

Simethicone Drug Interactions

Other drugs may affect how simethicone works. Possible interactions with other medicines can increase the risk of severe adverse effects.

Give your doctor or pharmacist a complete list of your medications, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, dietary supplements, and herbal remedies. Also, tell your healthcare professional if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use recreational drugs because some of these substances can cause serious health complications when used with prescription and non-prescription medications.
