How should I take Valtrex (valacyclovir)?

Valtrex comes as a tablet to be taken by mouth with water. You can take Valtrex with or without food. You should not delay treatment. The medication is more effective if you start treatment soon after experiencing symptoms.

Read your prescription label carefully for the number of doses per day and the duration of treatment. Do not take more or less of this medication or take it more or less frequently than prescribed. Continue taking Valtrex until you finish your prescription, even if you feel well. Do not stop taking the medication without talking to your doctor first.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of Valtrex, take it as soon as you remember and take the remaining doses at evenly spaced intervals. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses simultaneously to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Valtrex at room temperature (between 59° to 77°F (15° to 25°C) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused Valtrex should be disposed of so that children, pets, and others cannot get to it. Do not flush unneeded or expired Valtrex down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medications is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
