What is Zanaflex (tizanidine)?

Zanaflex (za nuh fleks) belongs to a group of medications called alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonists or skeletal muscle relaxants. It is a prescription oral medicine used to treat muscle spasticity (stiff muscles that will not relax). Zanaflex may be prescribed to people with multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, or brain/spinal injuries.

Who can take Zanaflex (tizanidine)?

Zanaflex is approved for use in adults. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been evaluated in children under 18 years old. However, it may sometimes be given to children with multiple sclerosis or other conditions that cause muscle spasms or rigidity.
