Zanaflex (tizanidine) tips from pharmacists

  • Food has a big impact on how Zanaflex works. You can take this medicine with or without food, but you need to be consistent in how you take it.

  • Dry mouth is a common side effect of Zanaflex. Sucking on ice, chewing gum, or using a special mouthwash or lozenges (available at your local pharmacy) might help.

  • You cannot substitute Zanaflex tablets for capsules or vice versa. These two products are absorbed differently. Make sure you have the right formulation when you fill your prescription.

  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Zanaflex. It can make side effects like drowsiness worse. Do not drive or do anything that requires concentration until you know how the medicine affects you.

  • Do not stop taking Zanaflex suddenly. This can cause withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor about coming off this medicine gradually and safely.
