What is  Zanaflex (tizanidine) used for?

Zanaflex belongs to a group of prescription medications called skeletal muscle relaxants. It is used to relieve muscle spasticity (stiffness) and increased muscle tone in people with multiple sclerosis, stroke, or brain or spinal injury.

How does Zanaflex (tizanidine) work?

Zanaflex works by slowing the nerves that control muscle tone. When these nerves slow down, the muscles relax.

What is the dosage of Zanaflex (tizanidine)?

Zanaflex is available as an oral capsule (2 mg, 4 mg, 6 mg) and oral tablet (2 mg, 4 mg). Doctors usually prescribe Zanaflex at a starting dose of 2 mg up to three times a day. Your doctor might start you on a low dose of Zanaflex and increase the dose by 2-4 mg every 1-4 days. The total dose of this medication should not exceed 36 mg in 24 hours.
