How To Use Insulin Aspart
Insulin aspart should be injected subcutaneously (under the skin surface) at mealtimes. You can inject into the skin of your upper arm, stomach, thigh, or buttock. Refer to the manufacturer’s patient information leaflet and ask your doctor if you don’t understand the instructions for use of your insulin pen.
- Do not use the same area more than once in 1-2 weeks to prevent injection site pain.
- Do not inject insulin aspart into tender, hard, thick, lumpy, bruised, scaly, scarred, or damaged skin.
- Do not inject insulin aspart into a muscle. Your healthcare provider may, however, inject it into a vein in a healthcare setting.
- Do not use any insulin after the expiration date has passed.
Your doctor will tell you how many times a day to inject insulin aspart. Read the prescription label and follow the treatment plan. Read the complete information carefully and ask your doctor if anything is unclear. Do not adjust doses of insulin aspart without consulting your health care professional.
Do not use insulin aspart if your blood sugar levels are low or you have symptoms of hypoglycemia (shakiness, hunger, anxiety, clammy skin, fast or irregular heartbeat, or palpitations).
Insulin aspart treats diabetes but does not cure it. Continue using insulin aspart even if you feel well. Do not stop treatment without talking to your doctor, pharmacist, or care team.
Insulin aspart comes in vials, cartridges, and single-patient dosing pens. It can also be used in an insulin pump. Make sure you know what type of container your insulin aspart comes in. Do not use it with any other injection devices. Ask your doctor what other supplies, such as needles, syringes, pens, or an insulin pump, you will need to inject the medicine. Do not switch between insulin aspart and other brands or types of insulin without consulting your health care provider.
Missed dose: Insulin aspart is used shortly before or after meals. If you miss a dose and remember it soon afterwards, take the dose and go back to your regular insulin regimen. If some time has passed since your dose was due, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions. Do not inject a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store unopened insulin aspart pens, vials, and cartridges in the refrigerator. Do not freeze insulin aspart. These products can be stored in the refrigerator until the expiration date mentioned on the package. If you don’t have access to a refrigerator (for example, on vacation), store unopened pens, vials, and cartridges at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Discard any insulin that has been exposed to extreme cold, excessive heat, or direct heat and light. Read the manufacturer’s instructions on how long you can store an opened or unopened unrefrigerated insulin aspart FlexPen (typically 28 days), after which time it must be discarded.
Unused medicine: Unused insulin aspart should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to it. Do not throw insulin aspart in the trash can or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded insulin aspart is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
