How To Use Ropinirole

Ropinirole comes in the form of a regular (immediate-release) tablet and an extended-release tablet. For Parkinson disease, the medication is taken 3 times a day. For restless legs syndrome, it is taken once a day, 1-3 hours before retiring to bed. You can take this medication with or without food. Taking it with food can help prevent stomach upset.

Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet. Follow the dosing directions carefully. Your health care professional will begin treatment with a low dose of ropinirole and slowly increase the dose. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency unless your doctor tells you to.

If you are taking the extended-release (long-acting) ropinirole tablets, do not cut, crush, or chew them.

Ropinirole can relieve symptoms of Parkinson disease and restless legs syndrome, but it is not a cure for these conditions. Keep taking the medicine even if your symptoms are well controlled. Do not discontinue ropinirole suddenly. Doing so can cause withdrawal effects, including fever, muscle stiffness, pain, sweating, confusion, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. Your healthcare provider will tell you how to lower the dose gradually.

Missed dose: If you forget a dose of ropinirole, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. If you miss several days of ropinirole, talk to your doctor before restarting the medicine. You may need to start at a lower dose and gradually increase the dose again.

Storage: Store ropinirole at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused ropinirole should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw ropinirole in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded ropinirole is through a medicine take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
