Directions

How should I take amoxicillin (Moxatag)?

Take amoxicillin as directed by your physician and/or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with water every 8 hours (3 times a day) or every 12 hours (twice a day) as instructed. You can take amoxicillin with or without food. The length of treatment with amoxicillin depends on the type of bacterial infection.

If you take chewable amoxicillin tablets, make sure you chew or crush the tablet thoroughly before swallowing. The regular tablets and capsules should be swallowed whole with water—do not crush or chew these formulations of the medicine. The amoxicillin suspension bottle should be shaken well before use. For children, the suspension can be placed directly in the mouth or mixed with formula, milk, water, juice, or any cold liquid.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct amoxicillin dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more amoxicillin or take it more frequently than prescribed. Do not stop amoxicillin without talking to your doctor first. You might begin to feel better after a few days of taking amoxicillin. However, you should finish your prescription even if you feel better. The infection may not be fully treated if you stop taking amoxicillin before completing the course or skip doses. Also, this can cause the bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics.

Amoxicillin can be used for bacterial infections in infants, children, and teenagers. Follow your pediatrician’s instructions regarding the appropriate dosing for your child.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of amoxicillin, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do NOT take two amoxicillin doses to make up for a missed dose. Instead, finish your prescription as directed by your doctor.

Storage: Store amoxicillin tablets and capsules at controlled room temperature (between 15° -30°  C or 59° -86°  F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep amoxicillin out of reach of children. The suspension (liquid) should preferably be stored in the refrigerator but can also be stored at room temperature. Do NOT freeze the liquid. Dispose of any unused liquid amoxicillin after 14 days.

Unused medicine: Throw away any unused amoxicillin after the expiration date. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
