What are the pros and cons of amoxicillin (Moxatag)?

  • The drug has been in use for several decades, and doctors understand its benefits and risks well.
  • Amoxicillin is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.
  • The medicine is available as chewable tablets and liquid. This can make the medication easier to ingest if you don’t like swallowing pills. The liquid is available in multiple flavors.
  • Amoxicillin is generally well tolerated, and its side effects are not as bad as some other antibiotics.

  • Amoxicillin is more likely to cause diarrhea than some other antibiotics.
  • The dosing schedule of amoxicillin is 2-3 times a day, which can make it difficult to remember to take all the doses. 
  • Women who are on oral contraceptive pills need to use an additional method of contraception during amoxicillin treatment because it can decrease the effectiveness of birth control.
